Happy 25th Anniversary St Giles London Central!

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

It has been 25 years since St Giles first opened its doors in 1987 to teach English to international students in central London.  On Friday 20th April we held a party for all the students and staff at our London Central school to celebrate with birthday cake, cupcakes, music from 1987, a slide show and a quiz with prizes up for grabs!

On this special occasion Mark Lindsay, the Managing Director of the St Giles Group, gave a few words of thanks to all the staff and students over the years that have contributed to the continuing progress and success of the school:

When I opened this school all those years ago [in 1987], I opened with 21 students and 10 classrooms, so the building was empty. I did all the accounts, a lot of the maintenance and I had one general receptionist, two teachers and a part-time Director of Studies.

There are now almost one hundred members of staff in this school and last year we had 750 students at one point. Over 3000 students a year now attend this school and many come back. It is the largest school in the St Giles group and one of the biggest schools in London.

St Giles London Central has come a very long way and we are fortunate to have so many conscientious staff who care passionately about the quality of service we provide to the students. I would like to thank the staff for making the school a continued success, but most of all, I would like to thank the students because without them, we are nothing. I know that you have a choice, so thank you for coming to this school!

I would like to propose a toast to St Giles London Central – Happy 25th Birthday!

And the second best city in the world for students is… London!

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Thinking of reasons why you should come to study in London this year?  Well, here’s one for you: Last week, the BBC published an article on its website which revealed that London is the second best city in the world for students!

The ranking of the world’s 50 best cities for students is aimed at international students who are considering where to study.  Cities included in the ranking are those with more than 250,000 inhabitants and two or more top universities.  Factors taken into account were affordability, quality of life and university reputation.

London came in second place in the ranking, beaten only by Paris!  Both cities scored highly on quality of life, student mix and the employability of graduates, but the deciding factor was affordability.

In the article published on 15th February, Ben Sowter, lead researcher on QS Best Student Cities said:

“While high tuition fees make London a far more expensive proposition than Paris, London’s array of world-class universities means it is worth the investment for many students.”
