Vancouver Sun Run
April 30th, 2013

Celebrating community spirit, health and fitness!

Vancouver is home to the famous “Sun Run” which each year attracts enthusiasts from all around the world who come to the Canadian city to take part and race down its main streets, through the beautiful parks and along the coast. It is Canada’s largest 10K road race and the 2nd largest timed 10K in the world!

This year the race attracted almost 50,000 participants from the community and abroad, and our administration team at St Giles Vancouver joined together to form a corporate team for the event.

Frances Seaton, the Director of St Giles Vancouver, was pleased with the achievement of Team St Giles:

“One of our teachers came in with a very impressive 37-minute run, most of us took around 1 hour, and there were a couple of walkers as well! We had a great time, though some of us were walking funny for a couple of days!”

The primary aim of the Sun Run is to “promote health, fitness and community spirit, and to support amateur athletics”. Since 1997, one dollar from each Sun Run registration has been contributed to Raise-a-Reader, a national literacy campaign. The campaign went national in 2001 and has since raised over $10 million. Sun Run proceeds also benefit British Columbia amateur athletics through the Achilles International Track And Field Society and The Vancouver Sun Jerome International Track Classic, an annual track and field event that gives local athletes the chance to compete against some of the world’s best in their own province.

This year many runners wore blue and yellow to support the victims of the Boston Marathon.

Charity Success in 2012!
April 18th, 2013

All of our centres in the UK, USA and Canada are committed to raising money for charity. We are lucky to have fantastic staff and students who are generous with their time and enjoy getting involved to raise money and have some fun along the way too!

How much did we raise?

  • Our four St Giles schools in the UK raised a fantastic £6,542.54 for charity in 2012. St Giles trebled this and donated £19,627.62 to charity!
  • Our St Giles San Francisco centre raised $816.37 for local charities following fundraising events at the school. This was trebled by St Giles, reaching a total of $2449.11.
  • Our St Giles Vancouver centre also raised $483.42 for local charities.

How did we raise this money?

Each year, our St Giles centres hold charity events to raise money for good causes.  Here are just some events our schools held last year:

  • Halloween Fancy Dress Day
  • Summer Garden Parties
  • International Food Day
  • Student Parties
  • Charity Raffles
  • Bake Sales

Where did the money go?

The money raised by our UK schools in 2012 went to the following charities: Heart Children’s Home, Expand, Cancer Research and Go Make it Happen.

In San Francisco, the proceeds went to two local charities based in the same building as the school: Positive Resources and San Francisco Suicide Prevention.

Our Vancouver centre donated the money to the BC Cancer Foundation and the Union Gospel Mission.

New Charitable Donations

As of this year, all our students are asked to give an optional charitable donation of £1 GBP / $1 USD / $1 CAD when they enrol at St Giles. This money will be donated to the four main St Giles charities that our UK schools supported in 2012.

Photos from our Vancouver Makeover!
August 7th, 2012

If you haven’t already heard the news, our St Giles Vancouver centre has recently undergone a complete renovation!  We are delighted to be able to show off our newly refurbished school by posting just a few photos from our recent photo shoot!

The school, located in downtown Vancouver, now has more classrooms, most of which also have Interactive Whiteboards! In addition, there is a new café where our students can chill out and have a tasty snack between lessons, and a new office for our wonderful staff.  The new photos taken by Juna Photography show St Giles students enjoying the school’s great new facilities.

Check out these photos on the St Giles facebook page and let us know what you think!
