The CELTA Course Programme
Candidates should be at least 18 years old for the CELTA course (with a recommended age of 20 or above).
There are five units of study during your four-week CELTA course, which includes the following units and components:
- Unit 1 - Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- Unit 2 - Language analysis and awareness
- Unit 3 - Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Unit 4 - Planning and resources for different contexts
- Unit 5 - Developing teaching skills and professionalism
There are two components of assessment which are as follows:
Component One – Teaching Practice
Students will be expected to teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two ability levels. Assessment is continuous and based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.
Component Two - Written Assignments
You will be asked to complete four written assignments; one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English, one on language skills and one on classroom teaching.
To successfully gain the certificate you must pass both of the above mentioned components which consist of three pass grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'. There is no final examination for the CELTA course as they are all individually monitored by an external assessor appointed by Cambridge ESOL.
CELTA Entry Requirements
No previous teaching experience or knowledge is necessary but candidates should have a university degree or standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
Non-native speakers of English are welcome provided that they have a high level of English: CEFR Level C1 (preferably CEFR Level C2). Good language awareness is essential.
Following the initial application, all candidates are sent a Language Awareness Task that needs to be completed and sent back to the Teacher Training Administrator. Upon successful review, candidates will be interviewed personally by one of our Teacher Trainers who will assess their suitability to start the course.
Please note that for candidates who are out of the country, we will conduct phone interviews which will begin with a 30-minute written English task.
Candidates who complete the CELTA course successfully can immediately begin working in a variety of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching roles around the world.
As a trained St Giles teacher you will have learnt your new skills with one of the EFL industry's most respected and leading organisations. Your career and travel opportunities are endless, and we're committed to helping you on your way.
