Personal Help with Applications

As well as helping you choose and apply to universities and advising you about IELTS or TOEFL courses, St Giles Academic Counsellors will give you guidance on writing a personal statement which forms part of your application.

For special subjects and career courses, Academic Counsellors are happy to put you in touch with appropriate personnel in other institutions. For example, to study Art at Art School or university, you have to produce a portfolio of recent work as part of your application and for guidance on this you can meet Art Department staff from local universities. There are institutes for many kinds of professions, for example, accountants, shipbrokers or architects etc. These all have advice to offer on professional training and examinations. Finding websites and making phone calls are also part of the service.

For some subjects you may be called for an interview. The counsellor can help you prepare for that as well.

St Giles Counsellors will do all they can to facilitate your application, and make sure that good academic candidates and people with a specific career path to follow find the education and training they need.

THREE IMPORTANT POINTS

1) You do not need to wait for your IELTS or TOEFL results before applying. If your application is successful up to that point, the universities will give you a conditional offer; the condition is getting the score you need in those exams. You can arrange to have the IELTS score sent directly to the universities you have applied to. You then receive an unconditional offer, which you need to renew your visa.

2) There are certain papers you need to bring with you that will accompany your application to a university in the UK. Click here for a list of the documents you will need.

3)There are time limits on when you can apply to a university in the UK which must be kept to:

For undergraduate courses starting in September 2007, applications must be submitted to UCAS between 1st September 2006 and 30th June 2007. Students from EU countries are advised to submit their applications by 15th January 2007.

For undergraduate applications to Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses starting in September 2007, applications must be submitted to UCAS by 15th October 2006.

For foundation courses starting in September 2007, applications must be submitted to UCAS between 1st October 2006 and 1st September 2007. However, some very popular institutions will fill their places on foundation courses before 1st September, so an early application is advisable.

For postgraduate courses starting in September 2007, applications must be submitted between 1st October 2006 and 15th August 2007. However, some very popular institutions will fill their places on postgraduate courses before 15th August, so an early application is advisable.
