Cambridge CELTA

Students on a CELTA course

The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is an internationally recognised initial qualification for English language teaching. Candidates who complete the course successfully can begin working in a variety of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching contexts around the world.

St Giles offers the full-time CELTA as a four-week intensive course. It is available in three of our centres: Brighton and London Highgate (UK) and San Francisco (USA).

There are five units of study during your course:

  • Unit 1: Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Unit 2: Language analysis and awareness
  • Unit 3: Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Unit 4: Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Unit 5: Developing teaching skills and professionalism

There are two components of assessment as follows. To gain the certificate, you must pass both components. There are three grades: Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'. There is no final examination; an external assessor appointed by Cambridge ESOL will moderate each course.

Component One: Teaching Practice
You will be expected to teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two ability levels. Assessment is continuous and based on your overall performance by the end of the six hours.

Component Two: Written Assignments
You will be asked to complete four written assignments; one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills and one on classroom teaching.

  • No teaching experience necessary, but candidates should have a university degree or standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
  • Non-native speakers of English are welcome provided that they have a high level of English: CEFR Level C1
  • Good language awareness is essential.
  • Candidates should be at least 18 years old for the CELTA (with a recommended age of 20 or above).
  • Following the initial application, all candidates are sent a pre-interview questionnaire and language awareness task. Succesful candidates will then interviewed personally by one of our Teacher Trainers who will assess their suitability to start the course. This will include a written task.

As a trained St Giles teacher you've learnt your new skills with one of the EFL industry's most respected and leading organisations. Your career and travel opportunities are endless, and we're committed to helping you on your way.

Opportunities for employment often arise in all of our year round schools, as well as in our rapidly growing Junior Summer Camp operations. Exciting placements also exist overseas with our global network of partners. Career Advice and counselling are included in your course fees, and sessions on finding work will take place routinely throughout your course with us.
