What is TKT?
TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is a Cambridge award testing professional knowledge
for English language teachers.
It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the
core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners,
anywhere in the world. It does not test teaching ability or a teacher's language
proficiency. TKT focuses on:
|
different methodologies for teaching |
|
the 'language of teaching' |
|
the ways in which resources can be used |
|
the key elements of lesson planning |
|
classroom management methods for different needs |
Who is TKT for?
|
TKT can be taken at any stage in a teacher's career |
|
It is suitable for teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners all over the world |
|
It is also ideal for people who would like to teach English but have not yet started teaching |
|
Teachers need to have at least an intermediate
level of English - level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages - This is equivalent to Cambridge PET, IELTS band score of 4, TOEFL computer-based test score of 133) |
TKT is ideal preparation for Cambridge ESOL's well-established teaching awards:
ICELT
(In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) and
CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).
What does TKT involve?
TKT has three modules. These can be taken together at the same time, or separately, in any order, over a period of time. For each module there is a test of 80 questions which lasts 80 minutes. Candidates must select the correct answer and mark this on a computerised answer sheet.
Module 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching
Module 2 - Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching
Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process
What does St Giles offer?
St Giles Brighton offers TKT in conjunction with the St Giles TEC
or ICELT Module 1 courses, and participants
on either course may choose to take the TKT test(s) during the final week.
|
Candidates do not necessarily
need to be practising teachers unless taking the exam in conjunction with ICELT Module 1, but all candidates must
be familiar with basic concepts relating to English language teaching. |
|
The exam fee is the only additional cost |
|
Participants decide on the number of TKT modules they will
prepare for at the start of the course |
|
Candidates prepare for TKT with the help of input sessions and self-directed study |
|
Aspects of methodology are covered as an integral part of the course |
|
Candidates receive a grade from Band 1 (lowest) to Band 4 (highest). TKT is not a pass/fail test |
Funding for all these courses may be available for EU teachers under the EU Socates-Comenius Programme
