The New York Experience

October 24, 2011 by St Giles

Learning English at St Giles is a unique experience, especially when you are learning English in some of the amazing places that our schools are located. We asked some of our students at our New York English language school to write about an experience they had at St Giles. Here is what one student wrote about their first experience watching a tennis game at the US Open.

“We are buying tickets for the US Open, would you like to come”? Sure I would like to go! And the whole thing began.

So, later in that week we were at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and we watched the following games:

Women’s singles: Caroline Wozniacki vs Arantxa Rus

Men’s singles: Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Berlocq

For some of us it was our first live tennis game, and I must confess that it was one of the few tennis games I’ve ever watched in my life. But, it was not important how much we knew about tennis champions and tennis rules and whatever… we were there! The nine of us, from different countries, different cultures and different ages. At the beginning I thought that I could not get head or tail of the thing! But after a while, the game became clearer. We were all happy of being there, enjoying the game and all the surrounding stuff: the view of Manhattan from the top of the stadium, the venue, the round tickets to everywhere that none of us won, and all the American food, hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, pretzels and a load of ketchup!

It was a great night out there and I will remember it for a long time!
