Brighton is a vibrant seaside city just an hour from London and 30 minutes from Gatwick airport. Our large, lively school is in the city centre and minutes from the beach. 

It has a diverse mix of nationalities and a really welcoming atmosphere. You’ll be busy on CELTA so it’s good to be in a city like Brighton where your journey to school doesn’t take too long.

At the weekend, when you want a break from studying, you can take a walk along the beach or have a coffee in one of the many independent cafes.

About the Course

The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is recognised by the British Council and by a large number of employers and governments worldwide. As a teacher trained by St Giles you will acquire your new skills with one of the industry's most respected and longest established English language schools.

The CELTA course consists of a minimum of 120 hours of attendance and additional hours of self-study. You will observe qualified teachers at St Giles, you will have teaching practice with groups of students every day from day 2 of the course (on which you will receive feedback from your tutors) and you will complete four written assignments.

The CELTA course has five units of study:

  • Unit 1- Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Unit 2- Language analysis and awareness
  • Unit 3- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Unit 4- Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Unit 5- Developing teaching skills and professionalism

Head of Teacher Training

Erica is an experienced English language teacher and teacher trainer, currently the Head of Teacher Training at St Giles Brighton. Driven by a desire to travel, she started her teaching career and taught internationally before joining St Giles in 2012. As an approved CELTA and Delta trainer, she has trained both new and experienced teachers in the UK and internationally in countries like Uzbekistan, Cuba, Peru, and the USA.

Emily began her ELT career in the 90s, working in Turkey, France, and Ireland before joining St Giles. Since the 2000s, she has worked as a CELTA tutor, contributed to DELTA courses, and delivered training for overseas teachers, including projects in Senegal, Ghana, and Angola. She continues to teach EFL, EAP, and ESP at all levels, deliver teacher development sessions, and mentor through an in-house program.

Fran

CELTA Trainer

Fran began her ELT career in the 1990s, teaching in the UK, Australia, South Korea, and the Czech Republic before becoming a teacher trainer at St Giles Brighton in 2003. She is a CELTA and Delta tutor and assessor. She has led teacher training in Bangladesh, Russia, Uzbekistan, Senegal, and Ghana, and has a special interest in SEN, providing one-on-one support for St Giles' students.

Jessica began her ESL career in 2010 after completing her CELTA, working in London for two years. She then spent two years in Vietnam with the British Council, teaching adults and children. After returning to England, she worked at a Brighton language school for seven years, moving into management and training teachers. Missing the classroom, she joined St Giles as a CELTA trainer in 2021. Outside of work, she enjoys writing songs, singing in a choir, and exploring various crafts.
