IELTS Practice

Outside of the classroom, there are plenty of things you can do to help you prepare for your exams and develop your skills. Of course, the teachers at St Giles are always here to provide advice but we have a few suggestions for your own private study time.

Carefully study the exam format to ensure that you are fully aware of what will be required on the day.

Focus your efforts on listening to, writing, speaking and reading the English language.

Study the types of questions that will be asked and practise all of the required answer formats, written and spoken.

Ask a friend, family member or fellow student to take the place of the examiner to conduct a mock test under exam conditions.

Stages of the IELTS

Thera are four components to the IELTS exam that you will need to complete.

Writing

The writing exam includes two tasks and lasts 60 minutes:

Task 1: Describe a visual (line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, or process) in at least 150 words.

Task 2: Write a 250-word essay on a general academic topic.

Speaking

The speaking exam lasts 10-15 minutes and is conducted one-on-one with an examiner. It has three sections:

Section 1: Answer general questions about yourself and two topics of general interest.

Section 2: Speak for 1-2 minutes on a subject provided by the examiner, with 1 minute of optional prep time.

Section 3: Answer in-depth questions related to the topic from Section 2.

Listening

The listening exam lasts 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet. It includes four sections:

Conversation: Two people in an everyday social context.

Monologue: Everyday social context, like a speech about local facilities.

Conversation: Up to four people in an educational or training context, such as a student and tutor discussing an assignment.

Monologue: Academic subject, like a university lecture.

Reading

The reading exam lasts 60 minutes and includes three sections with 40 questions. Each section has one text (2000–2750 words).

Students will receive a question sheet (which may be written on but not removed) and an answer sheet. Question types include multiple-choice, identifying information or the author’s opinions, and matching information.
