Finding a Job
The St Giles Educational Trust works in partnership with an increasing number of overseas employers who are seeking newly qualified EFL teachers. You will receive details of current vacancies during and after you take your CELTA course at St Giles.
Your St Giles trainers will give you help and advice but in the meantime, here are some tips to help with your job search:
- Learn about the countries in which you would like to work - this includes local laws, culture, customs and visa requirements. Find out as much as you can about the cost of living in relation to the salary you will be earning (bear in mind that these are often different in capital or major cities from the rest of the country)
- Check the credibility and background of organisations for which you wish to work: Make the most of online communities to contact other people who have already worked there
- Be aware of potential scams such as institutions or recruitment agencies who ask you to pay a fee
- Be sure that you are very clear about the terms & conditions of employment before signing any contracts, for example:
- What is the salary, holiday entitlement, notice period (on both sides) and working hours?
- Are your working hours guaranteed and do they include time for lesson preparation and attending meetings?
- Will your travel to and from the country in question be paid for and are any fares for trips home during the year included?
- Will accommodation be provided or subsidised and if not, what are the local options and costs?
- What type of classes will you be teaching and what is the code of conduct at the organisation?
- Participate in English language teaching conferences: IATEFL is the major international annual conference for ELT but there are many others, including those relating to specific areas of English teaching. These events and also ELT networks help you to stay updated on with current developments and trends within the field and thus to improve your employability.
- Send originals of your certificates and other documents through the post to any employer – always send copies
- Accept any position until you are completely clear about the Terms & Conditions and you feel that you have had sufficient contact with the employer
- Book and pay for travel until you have a signed contract from your new employer
- Make any commitments (in relation to any aspect of the Terms & Conditions) with which you are not entirely comfortable.
