St Giles Educational Trust- Teacher Trainers Assist the British Council with Syrian Refugees

The St Giles Educational Trust has placed two teacher trainers with the British Council in Jordan to assist with the British Council’s work with Syrian refugees.  The Council’s ‘Language for Resilience’ research is exploring the role of language skills development in providing access to education, training and work opportunities for people affected by the current crisis, as well as fostering social cohesion with the host communities of Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and the Kurdistan region of Iraq.Teachers in Jordan1

The British Council’s HOPES and LASER projects are designed to provide access to English Language classes to Syrian students and to professional development schemes for teachers in Za’atari and Al Azraq refugee camps, in order to raise the quality of education provision in informal and remedial education.

The St Giles Educational Trust trainers, Chris Hadfield and Mike Bruce are working with teachers in local schools in Amman who will be teaching Syrian children and in the Za’atari refugee camp.  Chris and Mike will also be contributing to the ongoing Language for Resilience research which underpins the two British Council’s projects.  Chris is there now and Mike leaves for his one month placement in Jordan on 3 September!
